Lagos to host 2026 CAF Awards as Nigeria lands two major continental football events

Nigeria will sit at the centre of African football’s institutional calendar twice before the end of 2026 after the Confederation of African Football confirmed Lagos as host of its annual awards and selected the country to stage its Ordinary General Assembly.

CAF says the Ordinary General Assembly will be held in Nigeria on November 21, before the CAF Awards take place in Lagos on December 7.

The two events give Nigeria a concentrated period of continental football visibility spanning administration, governance and the celebration of Africa’s leading players and teams.

The decisions were approved by the CAF Executive Committee during a virtual meeting chaired by CAF president Patrice Motsepe on October 2. At the same meeting, CAF approved its competition calendar for the 2026–2030 period, saying the longer planning window is intended to give member associations, clubs and other stakeholders greater certainty around future competitions and events.

For Nigeria, however, the story goes beyond calendar dates.

Hosting the General Assembly places the country inside one of CAF’s key decision-making gatherings. Weeks later, Lagos will become the public-facing centre of African football when the continent’s leading performers are recognised at the CAF Awards.

That means Nigeria will carry both institutional and event-delivery pressure.

CAF’s procurement programme shows that preparations for the two events already extend across branding, event management, transport, interpretation, security, broadcast production and creative services.

Those tenders do not establish individual sponsors or commercial partners, but they underline the scale of organisation required to deliver two major CAF events in the same country within a matter of weeks.

The hosting sequence also gives Nigerian football an opportunity to project influence beyond the pitch.

Administrators will have African football leadership on home soil during the General Assembly, while Lagos will later receive the players, coaches, officials and other figures who define the continent’s annual awards conversation.

That combination creates visibility. It also creates scrutiny.

Nigeria will be judged not simply on securing the events, but on how effectively they are staged and whether the country converts continental attention into stronger institutional credibility and lasting sports-business value.

CAF has already fixed the dates.

The next test belongs to Nigeria: turning two major appointments on Africa’s football calendar into two events that justify the spotlight.
