Benue boat disaster: Four bodies recovered, nine missing as safety questions grow

Four bodies recovered, nine missing after Benue boat disaster as safety questions mount

Four bodies have been recovered and nine people remain missing after a passenger boat carrying mourners capsized at the Buruku crossing point in Benue State, according to the latest update from the State Emergency Management Agency.

The accident happened around 11am on Saturday on the Buruku River as passengers from neighbouring Gboko Local Government Area returned from a burial ceremony.

Benue SEMA Information Officer Tema Ager said on Sunday that four bodies had been recovered, including that of Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Moses Tsuagh, while nine passengers were still unaccounted for.

The casualty picture, however, remains unsettled.

Buruku Local Government Chairman Raymond Zege separately told journalists that six people died in the accident.

Until the state authorities reconcile the competing figures, IDNN is treating four recovered bodies and nine missing people as the latest SEMA position rather than a final death toll.

Passenger estimates remain unclear

Officials and survivor-linked accounts have also given different estimates of how many people were aboard the vessel.

SEMA said information from survivors indicated that more than 200 people may have been on board, including motorcycle riders, their passengers and other mourners who joined at the waterside.

Earlier accounts from the Buruku council chairman put the number above 70.

The boat was also reported to have been carrying dozens of motorcycles.

That uncertainty matters because passenger load is now central to questions about how the disaster happened.

Zege said the vessel was overloaded and that its engine developed a fault before passengers tried to stay afloat while another boat moved towards them.

A preliminary account from the Benue Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy gave a different version, saying a strong current swept the boat towards an abandoned barge before it overturned.

Those accounts have not yet been reconciled by a completed investigation.

Government suspends operators

The Benue State Government has suspended the Buruku crossing-point branch of the Nigeria Union of Maritime Workers following the accident.

Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy Denis Iyaghigba also ordered the suspension of the line operator and directed the detention of the boat skipper pending investigation.

The ministry said an inter-ministerial committee would investigate the immediate and underlying causes of the disaster, while local divers and relevant agencies continued search and recovery operations.

Iyaghigba also directed operators at river crossings across the state to comply with the mandatory use of life jackets.

The measures turn the accident into an accountability test for a safety system that was already supposed to be in force.

Safety rules were already in place

The Buruku accident came months after the Benue government announced stricter water-transport rules following an earlier fatal boat accident in the area.

Those measures included compulsory life jackets and a prohibition on overloading.

The fresh disaster therefore raises two immediate questions: whether those rules were being enforced at the Buruku crossing point, and whether the vessel complied with them before it departed.

At this stage, neither question has been conclusively answered.

The reported overloading remains Zege’s account and has not yet been established as an official finding.

Likewise, the detention of the skipper does not establish negligence or criminal responsibility.

Families wait as search continues

For families, the urgent issue remains the passengers who have not been accounted for.

Search and recovery efforts were continuing as authorities worked to establish who survived, who remained missing and how many people were actually aboard the vessel.

The accident also exposes the wider risks faced by communities that depend on river crossings for movement between settlements, ceremonies, markets and other daily activity.

The next decisive update must do more than produce another casualty figure.

Authorities will need to reconcile the death and missing-person counts, establish the passenger manifest as far as possible, determine the mechanical and environmental causes of the capsize, and explain whether existing safety rules were enforced before the boat entered the river.

Until then, the strongest verified position is that four bodies have been recovered, nine people are reported missing by SEMA, and the final toll remains unresolved.
