Assault: NPFL Fan Jailed for Attacking Plateau United Player

A Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fan, Bashir Bala, has been sentenced to three months imprisonment for assaulting Plateau United player Temitope Vincent during a heated matchday incident in Lafia, last Sunday.

The sentencing, which took place on Thursday, April 18, was delivered by a Chief Magistrate Court in Lafia. The fan was arrested immediately after the game, following the violent clash between Nasarawa United and Plateau United that ended 3–2 in favour of the home side.


 Tension Erupts After Final Whistle

While the match itself was an intense battle, it was the post-match chaos that grabbed national attention. Shortly after the final whistle, Bala attacked Plateau United’s Vincent Temitope, leaving the player reportedly bruised around the neck.

Although early reports alleged stabbing, Nasarawa United issued a statement refuting such claims, insisting that the attacker was not affiliated with the club.

“Contrary to the sensationalised reports, a physical altercation did occur between a spectator, who is not a supporter of our club, and Plateau United’s Vincent Temitope,”

The club also claimed eyewitnesses confirmed that Bala used his fingers, not a weapon, to inflict the injuries—labelled by the club as a “slight bruise” rather than a stab wound.


Club Punishment: Nasarawa United Banished and Fined

Despite disassociating from Bala, Nasarawa United faced severe disciplinary action. The NPFL banished the club to Gombe for the remainder of their home fixtures and slammed them with a ₦6 million fine.

The incident further complicates Nasarawa United’s season, as the team currently sits 14th on the NPFL table, teetering just one point above the relegation zone.

Their next fixture will see them travel to Benin City where they face Bendel Insurance this Sunday.

The court’s swift ruling is being hailed as a strong statement against violence in Nigerian football. With increasing concerns over matchday safety, this incident underscores the urgent need for stricter stadium security protocols, fan education, and responsible crowd management.
