Kaduna Ebola Preparedness: Isolation Facilities Readied

Kaduna Prepares Isolation Facilities, Strengthens Ebola Surveillance

Kaduna’s public-health director says isolation facilities in Mando are prepared and surveillance has been strengthened. He reported no identified Ebola contacts in the state on November 1.

Kaduna State has prepared isolation facilities at its infectious disease hospital in Mando and strengthened disease surveillance as part of its Ebola preparedness measures, according to the state’s Director of Public Health, Dr Sadique Abubakar.

Speaking to PUNCH on November 1, Abubakar said the state had activated the hospital, supplied protective equipment and medical commodities, and completed a readiness assessment.

He said no Ebola contacts had been identified in Kaduna at the time of the interview. The measures described concern preparedness, rather than the treatment of a confirmed case in the state.

Mando Facilities Prepared

Abubakar said isolation facilities had been prepared at the Mando hospital, while selected secondary healthcare facilities had also received supplies to support a response to suspected cases.

He said the readiness assessment was intended to identify gaps, improve coordination and strengthen the state’s ability to respond if needed.

The published account did not specify isolation-bed capacity, staffing levels or the gaps identified during the readiness assessment.

Surveillance and Public Awareness

The public-health director said rapid response teams and emergency structures were active. He also described community engagement and public-awareness activities through radio and television.

Abubakar urged healthcare workers to remain alert and follow infection-prevention procedures, noting that early symptoms could resemble those of other illnesses.

He encouraged residents to remain calm and cooperate with health authorities.

Preparedness Is Separate From Confirmed Infection

In a clarification signed October 31 and published November 1, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said two suspected Ebola cases in Adamawa had tested negative after two rounds of laboratory testing.

NCDC said the previously confirmed FCT infection remained Nigeria’s only confirmed case at that point.

The measures described are precautionary. The accounts reviewed did not report Ebola admissions at the Mando facility or detail its referral arrangements.
