President Bola Tinubu has nominated General Christopher Gwabin Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff known for his operational depth in the North-East theatre, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence. The appointment comes less than 24 hours after Mohammed Badaru Abubakar’s sudden resignation, marking a swift and decisive correction at the apex of Nigeria’s security leadership.
The announcement was made by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that Tinubu has already forwarded Musa’s name to Senate President Godswill Akpabio for immediate confirmation.

- Deputy Chief of Staff, Training & Operations
- Commander, Nigerian Army Infantry Corps
He also served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 to October 2025.
Tinubu expressed “full confidence” in Musa’s capacity to strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture amid rising insecurity and intensified terror operations across northern corridors.

- major school abductions in Niger and Kebbi states,

“Musa knows the terrain, the threats and the operational weaknesses better than most. His return to command is deliberate and critical.”

Given Musa’s credentials and government urgency, his Senate screening is expected to proceed swiftly, restoring full leadership to the Ministry of Defence.
The Presidency emphasised that Musa’s appointment aligns with Tinubu’s broader security overhaul, which includes:
- recruitment of 20,000 new police officers,
- deployment of forest guards,
- strengthened school protection protocols,
- reinforced intelligence coordination.
