BADARU RESIGNS — NIGERIA’S DEFENCE CHIEF QUITS IN THE MIDDLE OF SECURITY EMERGENCY

Nigeria’s security landscape was jolted on Monday after Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru resigned with immediate effect, deepening tension inside a nation already battling a security emergency. The Badaru resignation security emergency combination has set off a ripple of political concern across Abuja’s security architecture.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the resignation, saying Badaru stepped down on health grounds. He tendered the letter on December 1, and President Tinubu accepted it instantly.

Badaru Resignation Security Emergency Sparks Political Anxiety

The move lands at a volatile moment. President Tinubu recently declared a nationwide security emergency following a surge in mass abductions, coordinated terror activity and rural attacks.

Security analysts say the coincidence is too sensitive to ignore.

Badaru served as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before assuming office as defence minister in August 2023. His exit now leaves the Defence Ministry without a political head at a time when coordination among military, intelligence and political structures is most critical.

A senior military source told IDNN:

“Operational decisions continue, but political leadership at Defence during a crisis matters. The timing complicates things.”

Presidency officials say Tinubu is expected to inform the Senate of a successor within days, signalling urgency at the highest levels.

The resignation also comes amid intensifying public fear as dozens of communities plead for military reinforcement. With kidnappings rising and foreign intelligence assets reportedly active over ISWAP zones, any vacuum at Defence raises national sensitivity.

Tinubu’s allies insist the transition will be “swift and uninterrupted,” though political watchers believe the next appointment will be one of Tinubu’s most consequential decisions since assuming office.
