Three-storey Abuja building collapses after FCTA sealing; rescue teams search site
A three-storey building collapsed in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, on Monday evening after Federal Capital Territory authorities said the structure had earlier been sealed and occupants ordered to leave.
Emergency teams launched a search-and-rescue operation at the site as authorities worked to determine whether anyone was trapped beneath the rubble.
As of the latest official update reviewed by IDNN, no victim had been confirmed.
That remains a provisional position while search and assessment continue.
Building had been sealed earlier
FCT authorities said the building had been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control before the collapse.
Officials also said occupants had been directed to vacate the premises.
FCT ministerial spokesperson Lere Olayinka said the building had shown signs of distress and that a quit notice was issued.
That remains an official account of the structure’s condition before the collapse.
IDNN has not independently reconstructed the building’s structural state or the timing of any defect.
Multiple agencies join rescue operation
FCT Police said it received a distress call at about 7:45pm.
FCT Emergency Management Department reporting separately placed its call at about 7:20pm.
Personnel from police, fire, NEMA, FRSC, FERMA, the Federal Fire Service and other response agencies joined the operation.
Ambulances were also positioned at the site.
Responders worked through debris while checking whether anyone remained trapped.
Casualty status remains unresolved
Authorities had not confirmed a victim in the latest update reviewed by IDNN.
That should not be read as a final finding that nobody was injured, killed or trapped.
Search operations were still underway when the latest official information was issued.
IDNN is therefore withholding any unverified casualty figure.
Cause has not been established
Authorities have not announced a confirmed cause of the collapse.
The fact that the building had been sealed after signs of distress raises important accountability questions.
