Lamine Yamal has stopped dancing around the biggest individual argument in football.
The Barcelona star believes he deserves the 2026 Ballon d’Or and when asked to identify the players operating at the very top of the game, he reduced the conversation to himself and Real Madrid rival Kylian Mbappé.
Speaking in an interview with Jorge Valdano for Movistar Plus programme Universo Valdano, Yamal openly backed his own claim. This comes after a year in which he won La Liga with Barcelona and became a world champion with Spain.
His position was emphatic.
“Mbappe and I are the two best in the world,” Yamal said, before arguing that his trophies give him the stronger case for the award.
It is more than another Ballon d’Or soundbite
Yamal has effectively placed a Barcelona-Real Madrid rivalry inside the individual-award race, turning his argument into a direct comparison with one of Madrid’s biggest stars.
At 19, the Barcelona winger already carries the kind of expectation usually reserved for players much deeper into their careers.
This time, he is not resisting that pressure.
He is claiming the stage.
Yamal’s argument rests heavily on winning.
His case follows Spain’s World Cup triumph and Barcelona’s La Liga success, giving him major team honours to place beside his individual influence.
Mbappé presents a very different challenge
The Real Madrid forward remains one of the defining attacking forces in world football and, in Yamal’s own assessment, belongs alongside him above the rest.
That respect does not extend to surrendering the trophy.
Yamal’s message is essentially that two players may currently define the elite but only one, in his view, has the strongest Ballon d’Or case.
The public declaration adds another layer to a race that is far from universally regarded as a two-man contest.
Other major names remain part of the wider discussion, making it important to separate Yamal’s own framing from any official ranking of the award race.
That distinction matters
Yamal is entitled to make his case. His declaration does not establish an official top two or reduce the actual Ballon d’Or field to two players.
But as a statement of confidence, it could hardly be clearer.
The teenager is no longer talking like a player hoping to be considered among the elite.
He is talking like someone who believes the debate should begin with him.
And by naming Mbappé as the other player at that level, Yamal has handed football another rivalry to carry beyond club colours, league battles and individual performances.
Barcelona against Real Madrid already has enough fuel.
Now Yamal has poured the Ballon d’Or onto it.
