Residents report at least 30 killed in Kaduna village attack

The casualty figure remains attributed to residents and a civil-society leader, while Kaduna authorities are yet to provide a full public account.

Residents and a local civil-society leader say at least 30 people were killed when gunmen attacked Naridon village in Kaduna State’s Kauru Local Government Area late Sunday.

The attack, reported from the Kamaru area of the state, has reopened a familiar question in Southern Kaduna: what protection exists for communities that have already lived through repeated raids, mourning and official promises?

Residents report late-night attack

Derek Christopher, chairman of the Southern Kaduna Peace and Security Network, told The Associated Press that the attack happened late Sunday night in Naridon village. He said the same community was attacked around the same period last year.

Christopher also accused authorities of failing to protect vulnerable residents.

A resident, Raphael Joshua, who was helping the injured, told AP that bodies of victims had been taken to a nearby hospital and that burial arrangements were being made.

Death toll remains attributed

The casualty figure remains attributed to residents and the civil-society account. IDNN has not independently confirmed the final death toll.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Kaduna State Commissioner for Home Affairs and Internal Security, Sule Shu’aibu, told AP he had not been briefed on the incident at the time he was contacted.

Burnt houses claim awaits confirmation

Local Nigerian reports also said houses were burnt during the attack. Some accounts placed the assault around midnight.

Those details require official confirmation before they can be treated as established fact.

Protection question returns

The attack comes as communities across parts of the North-West and North-Central continue to face raids, killings and abductions by armed groups.

Authorities commonly describe many of the attackers operating in those areas as bandits. However, no specific group has been confirmed as responsible for the Naridon attack.

For families in Naridon, the immediate consequence is burial, injury care and fear of another attack.

For Kaduna authorities and federal security agencies, the harder question is whether protection failed before the gunmen arrived — and what will change before the next vulnerable community is hit.

Response status: IDNN is seeking further confirmation from Kaduna security authorities on the casualty figure, the response timeline, the condition of injured residents, reports that houses were burnt, and whether any arrests or security deployments have followed the attack.
