Abure Rules Out Supporting Obi, Leaves Other 2027 Options Open
Former Labour Party national chairman Julius Abure has ruled out supporting Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, while leaving open the possibility of backing another candidate.
In an interview published by PUNCH on November 2, Abure said his eventual decision would depend on consultations with supporters, political interests and the outcome of a Labour Party leadership case that he said was before the Supreme Court.
He said he remained open to an alignment but was not negotiating with any presidential candidate.
No Candidate Endorsed
PUNCH reported that Abure was open to backing President Bola Tinubu or former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, but he said he had not begun talks with any candidate.
He said he would consult his supporters about a preferred candidate if the court had not delivered judgment by the end of November.
Abure also criticised Obi’s handling of the Labour Party crisis and predicted that he would struggle to repeat his 2023 electoral performance.
Obi’s Campaign Responds
Responding to the comments, Constance Ikokwu, spokesperson for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential campaign council, said Obi remained focused on the presidential contest.
She said his priority was the campaign and wished Abure well in his future political activities.
