Lake Chad Military Operations: Navy Reports 34 Killed

Navy Reports 34 Suspected Insurgents Killed in Lake Chad Operations

The Nigerian Navy says 34 suspected insurgents were killed during two operations in the Lake Chad area on October 28 and 30, while cautioning that the casualty figures remain subject to further verification.

Naval spokesperson Captain Abiodun Folorunsho said the operations involved Navy Marines deployed at Naval Base Lake Chad, working alongside the Nigerian Army’s 403 Amphibious Brigade under Operation Hadin Kai.

The Navy identified those reportedly killed as Boko Haram fighters. The casualty figures and identities have not been independently verified.

First Assessment Revised From Eight to 28

According to Folorunsho, the initial account of the October 28 operation put the number killed at eight.

Folorunsho said a subsequent military assessment revised that figure to 28.

Dumba Operation Remains Under Assessment

In the second operation, on October 30, Navy Marines reportedly struck a location at Dumba that the Navy described as a Boko Haram enclave.

Folorunsho said intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance activities preceded the strike. A preliminary assessment indicated that approximately six suspected fighters were killed and several others injured.

He said verification was continuing as operational assessments progressed.

The account reviewed did not provide information on civilian or military casualties in either operation.
