Senegal’s appeal to CAS, potential implications for AFCON integrity.

FSF to Challenge the Decision in CAS

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has decided to appeal CAF’s ruling, which handed Morocco the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. This decision came after Senegal walked off the pitch during the final match on January 19, 2025.

CAF’s Ruling on the Match

Following Morocco’s protest, CAF’s Appeal Committee ruled that Senegal forfeited the match. The committee cited Senegal’s misconduct during the match. The ruling awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory. CAF also mentioned that the Senegalese team violated Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations, resulting in a forfeit.

Senegal’s Response to the Decision

The FSF rejected the decision. They believe the ruling is unfair and harms the credibility of African football. On March 18, 2026, the FSF issued a statement criticizing the decision, calling it “unacceptable”. They also made it clear that they would take the matter to CAS in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The FSF stated, “The decision was made without fully respecting due process. We are confident CAS will see the matter differently.”

What Happened During the Final

The walk-off incident occurred after a disallowed goal and a penalty awarded to Morocco. The Senegalese players briefly left the field, protesting the referee’s decisions. According to FIFA’s regulations, leaving the field without the referee’s consent is considered misconduct. This could lead to serious consequences, including match forfeiture.

What’s Next for Senegal

Senegal is now focused on their appeal to CAS. The outcome of this case could impact future AFCON regulations. The FSF’s stance is that the walk-off was caused by unfair officiating, and the penalty should not have been imposed.

The appeal might lead to a review of how CAF handles match misconduct and protests. This case will likely influence how similar situations are treated in future tournaments.
