The medal table after Day 4 of the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged the Gateway Games, reflects a tightly contested battle for supremacy—with Bayelsa State holding firm at the summit, while traditional powerhouses like Delta, Osun, and Rivers ramp up their challenge.


Bayelsa’s Blazing Start Continues

Bayelsa, which set the early tone with medal hauls across combat, power, and aquatic sports, has maintained its top position with an impressive 16 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze medals. The state’s athletes have shown consistency in both individual and team events, putting clear daylight between themselves and the chasing pack.


Delta Roars into Second Place

Defending champions Delta State surged up the standings on Day 4, climbing into second place with 10 gold, 5 silver, and 6 bronze medals. The state’s late momentum is being powered by strong showings in athletics, swimming, and team events. Known for peaking as the tournament progresses, Delta is now poised to challenge Bayelsa for top honors.


Osun, Rivers, Lagos Round Out Top 5

In third place, Osun State has impressed with 6 gold and 1 silver medal, with standout performances in female football, judo, and wrestling.

Rivers State, sitting in fourth, follows closely with 5 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals, fueled by their strength in weightlifting and team sports.

Completing the top five is Lagos State, with 4 gold, 7 silver, and 10 bronze medals—a balanced medal spread that highlights the depth of talent within the state across multiple sports.


Bayelsa leads the pack with 16 Golds,

Oyo, Akwa Ibom, Plateau, Cross River & Edo Battle for Top 10

  • 6th – Oyo State: 4 Gold, 2 Silver, 6 Bronze
  • 7th – Akwa Ibom: 4 Gold, 1 Silver
  • 8th – Plateau State: 3 Gold, 2 Silver, 6 Bronze
  • 9th – Cross River: 3 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze
  • 10th – Edo State: 2 Gold, 15 Silver, 16 Bronze

Despite finishing tenth, Edo State’s remarkable 15 silver medals position them as strong contenders to rise if they begin to convert second-place finishes into victories.


Junior Athletes Continue to Surprise

The Invited Junior Athletes (IJA)—making their debut at the Festival as the symbolic 38th state—have stunned seasoned competitors with 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal, placing them in 11th position overall. Their performance continues to validate the NSC’s talent pipeline strategy.
