Adire Fabric Sells Out as Gateway Games 2025 Sparks Economic Boom in Ogun State

The National Sports Festival 2025, tagged Gateway Games, is not only delivering athletic excellence but also setting off an economic ripple effect in Abeokuta and surrounding towns.
Among the biggest winners: Adire fabric sellers, who have reportedly sold out their stock as thousands of athletes, officials, tourists, and vendors descend on the Ogun State capital.
Cultural Economy in Motion
Speaking to reporters, Hon. Bukola Olopade, Chairman of the Main Organising Committee and Director General of the National Sports Commission, revealed that Adire—the iconic indigo-dyed textile native to Ogun State—has been wiped off shelves.
“I gathered reliably that Adire is no longer in stock in Abeokuta. Imagine the volume of business it entails to wipe out the stock,” Olopade said.
SMEs, Hotels, and Markets Boom
According to Olopade, over 300 small and medium-scale businesses have opened temporary locations around stadiums and festival venues. From vendors selling food and drinks to artisans, tailors, and transport providers, the economic ecosystem is thriving.
Hotels in Abeokuta and even nearby Ikenne and Ilishan are reportedly fully booked, as over 11,000 athletes and officials are now confirmed to have registered and arrived for the Games.
“Go to Babcock University or anywhere around our key venues—businesses are springing up daily. This is what hosting a world-class sports festival brings,” he added.
Why States Should Host the NSF
Olopade used the occasion to encourage more state governments to bid for future editions of the NSF, highlighting the enduring value of sports tourism.
“Sports present an opportunity to build roads, upgrade infrastructure, and attract investment and revenue into your state. You can’t quantify the gains of something like this in naira and kobo alone,” he said.
From increased Adire sales to spikes in transportation, accommodation, and catering, the Gateway Games has proven to be more than a sporting event—it is a catalyst for economic vitality.
