“Student Loan Funds Missing?” — FG Calls Emergency Meeting Over NELFund Diversion Scandal

Alarm Bells in Education Sector Over Alleged Loan Diversions

The Federal Ministry of Education has sounded the alarm following disturbing reports of alleged illegal deductions from student loans disbursed under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund).

A report published by The Guardian alleges that some universities have engaged in unauthorized withdrawals from NELFund allocations meant strictly for student tuition and academic expenses.

“This is very disturbing and extremely concerning,” said Dr. Marut Olatunji Alausa, Nigeria’s Minister of Education.

In response, the Ministry has summoned the Vice Chancellors of affected institutions and the Managing Director of NELFund to an emergency meeting scheduled for May 6, 2025.

The meeting will seek to uncover the scale of the alleged infractions, enforce institutional accountability, and reassert strict compliance protocols.

“Any unauthorized deductions from student loans not only breach financial ethics but also undermine the very foundation upon which NELFund was established,” Dr. Alausa said.

Misuse of Public Funds = National Betrayal

The Education Minister emphasized that the misuse of public funds, especially those dedicated to the welfare of students, is a gross violation of trust.

“If proven true, this would be a betrayal of the government’s commitment to equitable access to education,” he stated.

The government has vowed to sanction any official or institution found complicit in the scheme.

Reform Measures Underway: Transparency Index + Open Portal

To address long-term concerns, the Ministry announced the launch of several reforms:

  • A University Transparency Index to monitor financial practices

  • A compliance-tracking webpage for public accountability

  • Technical assistance programs to support compliant financial management

  • A digital open-portal initiative for bursars and ICT heads in universities and polytechnics

The portal will allow students, stakeholders, and auditors to track all transactions related to student loans in real time.

📈 NELFund as Tinubu’s Flagship Promise

Established as a core policy under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, NELFund was designed to democratize access to higher education through interest-free loans for undergraduates in public institutions.

With Nigeria facing one of the highest out-of-pocket tuition burdens in Africa, the loan scheme was hailed as a lifeline for millions of students.

“NELFund was created to expand access to education and support institutions in a sustainable and legal manner,” said Alausa.
“Any attempt to exploit it is unacceptable and contradicts the President’s vision.”

Students at Risk, Integrity on the Line

The allegations, if substantiated, could undermine public trust in government-led student welfare programs — and worsen the already delicate perception of financial integrity in the education sector.

Education analysts are warning of long-term reputational damage if swift action is not taken.

“Students cannot become victims of administrative greed,” said policy expert Onome Felix.
“The credibility of the entire fund is on the line.”
