Former presidential candidate and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has reaffirmed his commitment to his political ideals, declaring that he will not trade his principles for personal gain amid internal upheaval within the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Speaking to supporters at his residence in Kano following reports of defections from the party, Kwankwaso dismissed suggestions that he could be swayed by political inducements.
“I’m not for sale. Our political convictions keep me grounded,” Kwankwaso said.
“If I were in this for personal gain, I would have taken the easy route.”
Call for Loyalty and Early Mobilisation
Kwankwaso said the strength of the Kwankwasiyya Movement lies in shared values rather than material incentives, urging supporters to remain steadfast despite recent political developments.
“Our shared vision is what keeps us going. If greed was my motivation, I would not still be standing here,” he added.
He also urged early preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning supporters against complacency.
“Going by what is happening now, we must begin preparing early. There are people determined to destroy what we have built,” he said.
NNPP Faces Internal Strain
The NNPP has faced heightened political pressure following the resignation of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and reports of defections by elected officials and party members in the state.
Kwankwaso said his political journey has always been centred on what he described as the emancipation of ordinary Nigerians, adding that his commitment remains unchanged despite shifting political alliances.
“My mission is to fight for the ordinary people. I will not compromise with those who exploit the masses,” he said.
Political observers note that Kwankwaso’s remarks signal an effort to consolidate his political base and reassert ideological control within the movement as Nigeria approaches another election cycle.
