Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), citing persistent internal crises and leadership disagreements within the party.
The governor conveyed his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the chairman of his ward in Kano, stating that the move was taken after careful reflection and in the interest of political stability in the state.
โIn recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes,โ Yusuf said in the letter.
โAfter careful reflection, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State.โ

Party Crisis and Governance Rationale
Governor Yusuf said the disagreements within the NNPP had deepened divisions at both state and national levels, weakening unity and creating uncertainty within the party structure.
โThese challenges have generated cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable,โ he noted, adding that his decision was taken โwithout any ill willโ toward party members.
He expressed appreciation to the NNPP for the opportunity to serve under its platform and thanked party leaders and supporters for their cooperation since 2022.
Wider Political Implications in Kano
Yusuf is reported to be leaving the NNPP alongside several members of the Kano State House of Assembly, members of the House of Representatives and multiple local government chairmen, a development that could significantly alter the political balance in the state.

The NNPPโs national leader and former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has previously warned against defections, insisting that the partyโs strength lies in its grassroots base rather than individual office holders.
Political observers say Yusufโs exit may trigger further realignments in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly if key political actors follow him into another platform. The governor is yet to formally announce his next political destination.
