LOKOJA — A senior Kogi health official says the state has renovated 63 Primary Healthcare Centres, with three facilities covered in each of its 21 local government areas.
Chief Medical Director of the Kogi Hospitals Management Board, Dr Ayo Olayemi, gave the figure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on September 17.
He said the government had also constructed seven additional PHCs in heavily populated areas that previously depended on a single primary healthcare facility.
What the 63-PHC Figure Means
The 63 figure is an official government-reported completion claim.
It does not, on its own, establish that every facility is fully staffed, equipped, supplied or delivering the same level of service.
Olayemi said the interventions were intended to improve access to healthcare and create safer environments for patients.
A Wider PHC Programme Is Still Ongoing
Kogi’s 2026 Citizens Budget separately lists the renovation of 111 Primary Health Care Centres as an ongoing project with an N8.4 billion budget provision.
That figure should not be treated as proof that 111 centres have already been completed.
It also should not automatically be merged with the 63 facilities cited by Olayemi because the public documents reviewed do not provide a reconciled facility-by-facility list showing how the programmes overlap.
Renovation Is Not the Same as Service Delivery
For residents, the central question is whether renovated facilities are actually functioning when patients need them.
A completed building does not by itself establish the availability of health workers, medicines, equipment, diagnostics, maternity care, immunisation or referral services.
The current evidence reviewed by IDNN does not independently establish that all 63 facilities are fully operational.
What Needs to Be Verified
The next accountability step is a published list of the 63 PHCs, showing the work completed at each facility and their staffing, equipment and service status.
That would also help establish how the 63 completed renovations relate to the separate 111-PHC project listed as ongoing in Kogi’s 2026 Citizens Budget.
For now, the verified position is narrower: Dr Ayo Olayemi says 63 PHCs have been renovated across Kogi and seven additional centres constructed, while independent facility-level confirmation of functionality remains incomplete.
