Edo Assembly Deputy Speaker Resigns as PDP Loses Grip

By: IDNN State Politics Desk

A political reshuffle has erupted in Edo State as the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Maria Oligbi-Edeko, tendered her resignation on Monday amid an avalanche of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oligbi-Edeko, who represents Esan North-East II, cited “justice, fairness, and equity for all constituencies” as her reason for stepping down. However, insiders point to the dwindling majority of the PDP in the Assembly following recent defections — including that of the Speaker himself — as the actual catalyst for her decision.

Domino Effect: PDP Minority Sparks Leadership Reset

The Edo Assembly had been under PDP control since 2023, with Oligbi-Edeko elected Deputy Speaker on June 16 of that year. Her resignation signals a critical shift in legislative power, as the APC now appears to command the majority of seats.

In a swift response, the House unanimously elected Hon. Osamwonyi Atu of Orhionmwon East (APC) as the new Deputy Speaker.

Majority Leader Hon. Jonathan Aigbokhan immediately moved a motion to ensure that all entitlements due to Oligbi-Edeko’s former office be accorded her without delay. The motion was seconded by Minority Leader Hon. Charity Airobarueghian and adopted via unanimous voice vote.

In her official resignation letter, Hon. Oligbi-Edeko thanked PDP leaders for entrusting her with leadership responsibilities. She stated that her decision was driven by a commitment to uphold fairness in legislative representation.

Lawmakers across party lines praised her “unwavering dedication and passion for public service,” even as the Assembly braces for more shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fallout: What This Means for PDP in Edo

The Edo Deputy Speaker resignation comes at a precarious time for the PDP in the state. Having lost high-ranking Assembly officials to the rival APC, the party’s grip on state-level power appears increasingly fragile.

Analysts predict the realignment could also impact the upcoming governorship election — making the Edo Assembly a major battleground in the unfolding national political chess game.
