Coco Gauff has landed her first title of 2026 at exactly the right moment, overpowering fellow American Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4 to win the Cincinnati Open for the second time.
The 22-year-old controlled the all-American final from the opening stages, taking the first set comfortably before resisting Pegula’s attempt to recover in the second and completing the victory in straight sets.
It was Gauff’s second Cincinnati title after her breakthrough triumph in 2023, adding another WTA 1000 trophy to a résumé already built around some of the biggest stages in women’s tennis.
This time, however, the timing carries extra weight.
Gauff takes control of the final
Gauff entered Cincinnati still searching for her first tournament victory of the season despite several deep runs. She leaves Ohio with a title, a commanding performance over one of the tour’s most consistent players and renewed momentum with the US Open approaching.
Pegula had arrived in the final with form of her own after defeating defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals.
Gauff never allowed that momentum to settle into the championship match.
She raced through the opening set 6-2 and maintained control in the second to close it 6-4, finishing the final without being dragged into an extended battle.
The result also carried a layer of American tennis history, with two of the country’s leading players facing each other in one of the biggest hard-court events before the final Grand Slam of the season.
Cincinnati changes the picture before New York
For Gauff, the statement is bigger than another trophy.
Cincinnati produced one of her strongest weeks of the year and changed the tone around her season just before New York.
That matters because the next challenge arrives quickly.
The US Open is next, and Gauff heads toward Flushing Meadows no longer searching for a title, but carrying the confidence of a major hard-court victory.
Pegula will also take positives from another deep run and a notable semi-final win over Swiatek.
Gauff heads to the US Open with momentum
But the final belonged to Gauff.
6-2, 6-4. Second Cincinnati title. First trophy of 2026.
And just before the US Open, one of American tennis’s biggest names has found her winning edge again.
