CHAN 2024: Super Eagles Lose 7 Players as Foreign Transfers Rule Them Out

By IDNN Football Bureau

The Super Eagles’ home-based squad preparing for CHAN 2024 has been hit by a major setback, with seven key players ruled out just days after camp opened in Ikenne, Ogun State.

According to the team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, five players have become ineligible for the continental tournament after sealing moves abroad, breaching CAF’s strict home-based eligibility criteria.

The affected players are:

  • Abubakar Sadiq (Plateau United)

  • Philip Adejo (Abia Warriors)

  • Saviour Isaac (Rangers)

  • Papa Daniels Mustapha (Niger Tornadoes)

  • Waliu Ojetoye (Ikorodu City)

All five players recently transferred to foreign clubs, thereby violating CHAN rules which restrict participation to players active in their domestic leagues.

In addition, two more players will miss the tournament for unrelated reasons:

  • Ifeanyi Onyebuchi (Rangers) – ruled out with injury

  • Ebenezer Harcourt (Sporting Lagos) – away with the Flying Eagles at the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Ghana

Despite the early blows, the camp remains active and focused, with 28 players currently training under head coach Salisu Yusuf and his technical crew.
