Kingibe Dares Wike: If You Believe in Your Achievements, Face Open Election

By IDNN National Assembly Correspondent

Senator Ireti Kingibe has thrown down the gauntlet to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, daring him to embrace democratic competition in the upcoming 2026 council polls instead of insinuating pre-determined outcomes.

Responding to Wike’s controversial remark that the “results of the FCT polls are already known,” Kingibe called the statement “a violation of public trust” and warned that such rhetoric threatens Nigeria’s democratic credibility.

“If you believe in your achievements, you should welcome open competition,” Kingibe declared in a fiery statement released via her social media channels.

“Why fear the electoral process if the people are truly satisfied? What is there to hide?”

 INEC, Not Appointees, Conducts Elections

The senator reminded the public that INEC—not the FCT administration—oversees elections in the Federal Capital Territory, insisting that any attempt to subvert the will of the people would face legal resistance.

“Any insinuation, overt or subtle, that someone other than the electorate can determine the result of an election is a betrayal of our laws and democracy,” she said.

Kingibe said she has notified relevant institutions of Wike’s “dangerous rhetoric” and vowed to monitor the 2026 election process rigorously.

 Mobilise, Organise, Participate

In a rallying cry to civil society, political parties, and voters in Abuja, Kingibe urged citizens to resist any form of voter suppression or pre-election intimidation.

“To the people of Abuja, I say: this is your land, your fight. We must not walk away from the struggle for credible elections and accountable leadership.”

She encouraged residents to mobilise door-to-door, engage their communities, and vote decisively when the time comes.

“I remain fully committed to the defence of your rights and the integrity of our electoral process,” she assured.

“I will use every legal and constitutional tool at my disposal to resist any attempt to hijack the will of the people.”

Broader Implications

Political analysts say the face-off could escalate tensions in the FCT ahead of the next poll cycle. With Wike accused by critics of building a parallel power base in Abuja, Kingibe’s challenge represents the first major institutional pushback from within the capital’s political leadership.

Both figures have rising national profiles and are seen as future power players in 2027 configurations.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has yet to comment on the growing tension between the senator and the minister.
