LASTMA Impounds 84 Vehicles as Officers Are Attacked During Lagos Crackdown
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority says it impounded 84 commercial and private vehicles during a weekend enforcement operation across parts of Lagos.
The exercise covered Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain and Onipanu.
LASTMA said officers targeted one-way driving, dangerous reversing, illegal parking, indiscriminate loading and the use of under-bridge spaces and road setbacks as unauthorised garages.
The agency said commercial buses reversing against traffic from Iddo towards Idumota through Carter Bridge were among the violations targeted.
Officers reportedly attacked
LASTMA said some personnel were assaulted and injured during resistance to the operation.
It also reported damage to operational vehicles and said some people it described as suspected miscreants were apprehended.
The number of injured officers was not stated in the public account reviewed by IDNN.
It is also unclear how many people were apprehended, whether they were transferred to police custody or whether any charges followed.
Those distinctions matter.
Being apprehended during an enforcement confrontation is not the same as being charged or found guilty of an offence.
What remains unanswered
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki said the operation was aimed at restoring order and improving traffic flow along affected corridors.
But the confrontation leaves several questions unresolved:
How many officers were injured?
How serious were their injuries?
How many people were apprehended?
Were any transferred to police custody?
And has any formal legal process begun?
For now, the strongest established public account is that LASTMA says 84 vehicles were impounded during the weekend enforcement exercise and that some of its personnel were assaulted during resistance to the operation.
