Anambra Flood: Search Continues for Missing Pupil After Nine Rescued
A schoolchild remained missing in the latest verified update after flooding trapped travellers along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka South, Anambra State, as police and community members continued search efforts following the rescue of nine people.
The Anambra State Police Command said seven schoolchildren and two adults were rescued after they were caught in floodwaters while travelling along the road in the early hours of Tuesday, September 22.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said Safe School operatives worked with members of the community to move the nine people to safety and launched a sustained search for another child who could not be accounted for.
A fresh report published on September 23 continued to describe the child as missing. No authoritative announcement located during IDNN’s latest verification confirmed that the pupil had been found or that the search had ended.
An earlier Anambra State Government account gave a different preliminary rescue count, saying six schoolchildren and a shuttle driver had been rescued while emergency personnel searched for another pupil.
The state said the rescued children were taken to hospital for medical attention.
The later police account gave the broader figure of seven schoolchildren and two adults rescued. IDNN has not independently established why the initial official count differed.
Search remains active
The incident followed heavy rainfall that caused flash flooding around parts of Awka and disrupted movement.
Police Commissioner Nnanna Ama directed responders to sustain and expand the search and appealed to people around the affected route to provide information that could assist rescuers.
Police also warned parents, school authorities and motorists against attempting to cross flooded roads, bridges or waterways during heavy rainfall.
The case remains a developing public-safety incident.
