Rivers Hoopers are back at the summit of Nigerian basketball.
The Port Harcourt club were crowned 2026 Nigeria Premier Basketball League champions after an unbeaten Final Four campaign, completing a rapid response to the disappointment of losing the national title a year earlier.
Current Nigerian reporting says the KingsMen effectively secured the championship with a game to spare after beating Gboko City Chiefs 88-76, before closing their campaign with a 92-90 overtime victory over Maktown Flyers.
The victory restores Rivers Hoopers to familiar territory.
FIBA officially recorded the club as six-time Nigerian champions after they won the 2024 league title, beating Hoops & Read 71-54 in the final and completing an unbeaten campaign.
Their grip on the title was broken in 2025.
FIBA’s official account shows Lagos Legends defeated Rivers Hoopers 74-72 in Port Harcourt to claim the 2025 Nigerian championship, ending Hoopers’ domestic dominance.
That makes the 2026 turnaround a genuine recovery rather than simply another trophy in an uninterrupted run.
Hoopers seize control in Port Harcourt
The decisive moment came against Gboko City Chiefs.
Punch reports that Rivers Hoopers hit 12 three-pointers in the 88-76 victory, while an earlier 72-64 defeat for Maktown Flyers against Aso SkyHawks meant Hoopers could no longer be caught in the Final Four standings.
They then removed any doubt about the strength of their finish by beating Maktown 92-90 in overtime.
The result completed a perfect Final Four and gave coach Ogoh Odaudu a championship response after the club’s 2025 setback.
Seventh title fits official historical record
Current Nigerian reporting describes the triumph as Rivers Hoopers’ seventh NPBL championship.
