FIFA Meets with Mexican Authorities to Ensure Security for 2026 World Cup

FIFA representatives met with Mexican security officials on Wednesday to review safety plans for the 2026 World Cup. The meeting came in response to growing concerns over recent violence in Mexico, following the death of drug kingpin Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Security Measures for the World Cup

The meeting focused on reviewing intelligence assessments, prevention measures, and operational deployment strategies to ensure the safety of players, officials, and fans during the global tournament. Mexican federal security secretary Omar GarcĂa Harfuch confirmed that both FIFA and Mexican authorities were working closely to guarantee a secure environment during the World Cup.

“We reviewed the intelligence, prevention, and operational deployment protocols that will be implemented during this international event,” García Harfuch said in a statement shared on social media.

Mexico’s World Cup Plans

Mexico is set to co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States and Canada. The country will host 13 matches across three cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. The tournament kicks off on June 11, 2026, with Mexico playing South Africa at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The stadium, undergoing extensive renovations, is expected to reopen later this month with a friendly match between Mexico and Portugal on March 28. Once complete, the Estadio Azteca will hold approximately 87,000 spectators.

Guadalajara and Monterrey’s Role

In addition to World Cup fixtures, Guadalajara and Monterrey will also host the six-team inter-confederation play-offs, which will determine two of the final spots in the 2026 World Cup. The teams competing in the play-offs include Jamaica, Iraq, DR Congo, Suriname, New Caledonia, and Bolivia.

President Sheinbaum’s Confidence

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed confidence that the country is fully prepared to host the World Cup. Despite the recent violence in Jalisco, she assured the public that security forces were well-equipped to handle any challenges.

“Security is guaranteed, and there is sufficient surveillance and inspection to ensure that absolutely no problems occur,” Sheinbaum said during a press briefing, adding that Mexico aims to host a “great and peaceful World Cup.”

FIFA’s Support

In a recent conversation with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, President Sheinbaum received reassurance that FIFA has confidence in Mexico’s ability to co-host the tournament, despite the recent unrest.

While the violence in Jalisco raised concerns, Infantino expressed his support for Mexico’s preparations, reinforcing that the World Cup will go ahead as planned.

Conclusion

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, Mexico’s security arrangements are a key focus. With FIFA’s backing and the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe event, the tournament is set to proceed in Mexico alongside the U.S. and Canada. The next steps will involve finalizing logistics and ensuring that all security protocols are in place to protect all those involved in the tournament.
