Eniola Bolaji, Nigeria’s para-badminton champion, has reached World No. 1 in the SL3 category. This achievement follows her impressive silver medal finish at the 2026 World Para Badminton Championship in Bahrain.
Bolaji’s climb to the top of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings comes after her standout performances this season, including a victory at the Egypt International in January.
Historic Achievement for Africa
Bolaji’s rise to World No. 1 is a historic first for Africa. She became the first African woman to reach this ranking in para-badminton. Her performance at the 2026 World Championship was exceptional, and although Shino Kawai of Japan defeated her in the final, Bolaji’s silver medal remains a major milestone for Nigeria and African sport.
“I’m proud of this achievement,” Bolaji said. “It’s an honor to represent Nigeria and Africa at the highest level of para-badminton.”
Bolaji Reflects on Her Journey
Bolaji expressed gratitude for her journey. She credited her success to the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) and key supporters like the Abia State Government and GIG Logistics.
“The support I’ve received has been incredible,” she shared. “I will keep pushing and continue to work hard to improve. I want to inspire others in para-sports and show that we can achieve anything with determination.”
Bolaji’s Continued Pursuit of Excellence
Although she lost the final to Shino Kawai, Bolaji is focusing on her future goals. She plans to defend her World No. 1 ranking and keep developing her skills in the lead-up to the 2026 Summer Paralympics in Paris.
“I’m not stopping here,” Bolaji said. “I want to keep working hard and making progress. I’m just getting started.”
Support for the Para-Sports Community
Francis Orbih, the President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), hailed Bolaji’s World No. 1 ranking as a historic moment for Africa. “Bolaji’s success shows what’s possible when we invest in para-sports,” Orbih said. “This is just the beginning for her.”
What’s Next for Bolaji?
Bolaji now sets her sights on the 2026 World Para-Badminton Championships and the 2026 Summer Paralympics. Her goal is to continue improving and to defend her World No. 1 ranking.
With her passion and determination, Eniola Bolaji is set to continue her rise as one of the world’s best in para-badminton.
