Olopade Denies Chelle’s Departure
Nigeria’s National Sports Commission (NSC) Director General, Bukola Olopade, has addressed the growing speculation surrounding the future of Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle. Reports had suggested that Chelle, whose stock has risen following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), might be considering a move to other African nations, including Tunisia, Gabon, and Angola.
Chelle’s Success and Commitment to Nigeria
However, Olopade has strongly denied these rumors, insisting that Chelle has no intentions of leaving Nigeria despite reported interest from other countries. Olopade emphasized that Chelle’s success with the Super Eagles has been driven by the quality of players available to him, and this has made his job easier.
“Eric Chelle is not going anywhere,” Olopade declared. “The countries claiming interest in him don’t have the kind of superstars that make his job easier.” Olopade also made it clear that discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are already underway to ensure the stability of the national team setup and to address the future of the coach.
Olopade Speaks on Personal Relationship with Chelle
“I had dinner with him two days ago at my house in Abuja,” Olopade continued. “I’m not the NFF President, but we operate with a collaborative approach, and Eric Chelle has become both a brother and a friend.”
Addressing Criticism from Sunday Oliseh
The NSC boss also addressed recent comments made by former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh, who had criticized the behavior of players like Victor Osimhen during Nigeria’s AFCON semi-final loss to Morocco. Olopade disagreed with Oliseh’s remarks, stating, “I disagree with Oliseh on many of his comments, including his indictment of Osimhen and others. Our superstars of yesterday deserve respect, but they must also take their place as mentors to the younger generation, not denigrate them.”
Chelle’s Future with Super Eagles Remains Secure
Despite the rumors, Olopade’s firm stance has reassured fans and stakeholders that Eric Chelle remains committed to his role with the Super Eagles.
