The incident occurred on Tuesday when Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, was involved in an accident in Umunede, Delta State. He was rushed to a hospital in Agbor but was confirmed dead.
Ndidi’s club, Besiktas, has since expressed its sorrow over the tragic event. The news has shocked many, as Wilfred Ndidi had recently captained Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. During the tournament, Ndidi scored his first international goal and celebrated by referencing his father and his admiration for former Nigeria captain Kanu Nwankwo. “The celebration came from my dad because he was always talking about Kanu Nwankwo,” Ndidi explained. “I just thought about my dad, and I said I was going to do it for him.”
