NULGE FCT Joins JUAC, Begins Indefinite Strike

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in the Federal Capital Territory has commenced an NULGE FCT strike

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in the Federal Capital Territory has commenced an NULGE FCT strike, joining the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) in an indefinite industrial action over unresolved welfare and entitlement issues affecting council workers.

The strike action, which took effect on Monday, followed the breakdown of negotiations between union representatives and relevant authorities, according to officials of the labour groups.

NULGE leaders said the decision to join the strike was reached after repeated engagements failed to produce concrete commitments on outstanding demands.

In a statement issued by the union, NULGE accused authorities of failing to honour agreements relating to workers’ salaries, allowances and conditions of service.

“The union can no longer continue to watch its members suffer while agreed obligations remain unmet,” the statement said, adding that the strike would remain in force until meaningful progress is achieved.

JUAC also reaffirmed its position, saying the industrial action was necessary to compel compliance with earlier agreements reached with the government.

Impact on council services

The strike is expected to disrupt operations across area councils in the FCT, with administrative services, revenue collection and other council-level activities likely to be affected.

Residents seeking services at local government offices may experience delays as workers withdraw their labour in line with the directive.

Calls for dialogue

Labour leaders urged the authorities to return to the negotiating table, insisting that the strike could be suspended if concrete steps are taken to address workers’ concerns.

They also called on members to remain peaceful and law-abiding while the action continues.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed response to the latest development as of the time of filing this report.
