Imo flooding submerges homes, shops and roads as residents seek emergency response
Heavy rainfall has flooded homes, businesses and roads across parts of Imo State, leaving residents stranded and disrupting transport, schooling and commercial activity.
The flooding followed hours of rain on Monday and affected parts of Owerri and neighbouring communities.
Punch reported that NEMA’s Owerri office confirmed receiving distress calls from several locations, with reports emerging from multiple affected areas.
At the Federal Housing Estate in Umuguma, Owerri West LGA, residents reported water entering homes and businesses, while some roads became difficult to navigate.
Schools in affected areas were also reported shut, while some residents said flooded access roads prevented movement.
Homes and livelihoods hit
Residents said floodwater entered shops and residential buildings, while some vehicles reportedly broke down attempting to cross flooded roads.
Students near the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, also reported water entering apartments.
In Emeabiam, residents reported submerged roads and farmland, raising concerns over access and crop losses.
Those accounts do not establish a statewide damage total.
Drainage and roadworks questioned
Some residents alleged that ongoing road construction and drainage conditions worsened flooding in their neighbourhoods.
IDNN has not independently established that claim.
The accountability question is whether drainage systems functioned as intended, whether construction affected water flow, and what assistance authorities are providing to affected households and businesses.
Imo is also among states under a current federal flood-risk advisory, but that warning does not establish the cause of these specific incidents.
