EFCC Grills Ex-Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal Over Alleged ₦189bn Fraud as ADC Accuses Political Witch-Hunt

By IDNN Politics & Anti-Corruption Desk

EFCC grills Aminu Tambuwal in Abuja over allegations of illegal cash withdrawals amounting to ₦189 billion during his time as Sokoto State governor (2015–2023).

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives arrived at the EFCC headquarters at 11:30 a.m. on Monday. He was taken straight in to face investigators probing possible breaches of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the interrogation but declined details, citing an active investigation. A senior official, speaking off record, described the transactions as “flagrant violations” of anti-money laundering laws.

ADC Pushes Back

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), with which Tambuwal has been recently linked, accused the EFCC of political bias. National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi alleged the commission is “acting like a department of the APC,” targeting opposition while shielding ruling party allies.

“In Nigeria today, guilt or innocence depends on party membership, not evidence,” Abdullahi said, pointing to probes that vanish when suspects defect to the APC.

Political Context

Tambuwal has been positioning himself within opposition coalition talks. His detention follows similar EFCC summons to other senior opposition figures in recent weeks.

Analysts say the case reflects a familiar pattern: anti-graft pressure intensifying when political alignments shift. The ADC warns that such selective action “erodes public trust” in the EFCC’s independence.
