Anambra Erosion: Umeh Reports Request for Designs

Anambra erosion: Umeh says federal office requested designs, cost estimates

Umeh says he asked the office to arrange inspections and technical preparation. The correspondence, funding and construction timetable have not been independently verified.

Senator Victor Umeh says the ecological fund office within the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation requested engineering drawings and cost estimates to assess possible intervention at erosion sites in Anambra Central.

Daily Post reported that Umeh disclosed the request during a press briefing in Awka on Thursday, November 5. His account of the correspondence has not been independently verified.

Umeh asks office to arrange inspections

According to the report, Umeh said he replied by asking the office to arrange site inspections and undertake the technical preparation.

He argued that the office should procure the necessary engineering services and award remediation contracts. He also offered to accompany officials to affected sites.

Umeh’s account describes a request for technical information ahead of possible intervention. It does not establish that funding has been approved or construction has begun.

Earlier appeals highlighted threats to communities

The senator’s appeal follows earlier warnings about erosion damage in his constituency.

Voice of Nigeria reported in August that Umeh sought emergency assistance after inspecting an erosion site in Obosi. He warned that erosion threatened homes, schools, roads and farmland in Idemili North and Idemili South. That report provides background to his appeal rather than confirmation of current conditions at each site.

In a separate November 4 publication, the Anambra State Government described continuing erosion damage across several communities, including disrupted roads, abandoned homes and lost farmland. The publication did not confirm the specific federal intervention discussed by Umeh.

Funding and construction dates unconfirmed

The material reviewed did not establish an approved budget, a contract award, a confirmed inspection date or a construction timetable for the intervention discussed at the briefing.
