Alexander Zverev spent years carrying the weight of Grand Slam heartbreak.
On Sunday in Arthur Ashe Stadium, he finally turned New York into the place where that story changed.
The German defeated Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 to win his first US Open title and his second Grand Slam crown of 2026, completing the most successful major season of his career.
The result did more than add another trophy.
It confirmed a transformation.
Zverev finished the four Grand Slams this year with a 25-2 record, a striking reversal for a player whose first 40 major main-draw appearances ended without a title and whose career at the highest level had become associated with near-misses, injury and unanswered questions.
From heartbreak to control
For years, Zverev’s Grand Slam résumé carried more pain than reward.
He lost his first three major finals, including the 2020 US Open final against Dominic Thiem after leading by two sets.

Shelton pushes back, Zverev stays steady
Shelton, playing in his first Grand Slam final, made Zverev work.
The American recovered from two sets down by taking the third, but Zverev regained control in the fourth and closed out the match without allowing the contest to turn into another test of nerve.

Zverev won 125 points to Shelton’s 113, took 24 games to 18, and converted four of six break-point opportunities. Shelton managed one break from three chances.
The German also won the match’s only tiebreak.

Zverev won 15 of his final 16 sets at the tournament, moving through the closing stages with the authority of a player increasingly comfortable with the expectations around him.
