FUTO confirms fatal campus attack, reports two female students abducted

FUTO confirms visitor killed, two students reportedly abducted in campus attack

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri, says a visitor was fatally shot on its campus on Sunday, September 6, while two female students were reportedly abducted during the same security incident.

FUTO says security agencies are investigating and management is working with the authorities over efforts to recover the students safely.

IDNN is withholding the students’ identities.

Bank confirms branch manager’s death

Polaris Bank separately confirmed that the man killed was one of its branch managers, publicly identified in current reporting as “Mr Ossy.”

The bank said he was taking his children to the university when he was attacked.

His children escaped.

The bank expressed condolences to his family and said law-enforcement agencies should be allowed to establish the circumstances of the attack.

FUTO says two students were taken

In a statement signed by Registrar Chiedozie Uba, FUTO said two female students were reportedly abducted during the incident.

The university said it was working with security agencies over their safe recovery.

No official announcement reviewed by IDNN has confirmed that the students have been recovered.

Police intensify security around FUTO

FUTO management met Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso after the attack.

Police acknowledged security concerns around FUTO and neighbouring areas including Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze and Nekede, and said security measures had been intensified.

The university also urged students, staff and parents to remain vigilant, limit unnecessary movement and report suspicious activity.

Those measures do not establish that the security threat has been resolved.

No arrest announced

Police have not announced an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting or the reported abductions.

Some reports have described the attackers as suspected kidnappers.

That remains a preliminary characterisation.

IDNN is not treating the attackers’ identity, motive or responsibility as established fact.

What remains unresolved

For now, the confirmed position is limited:

A visitor was killed on the FUTO campus.

Two female students were reportedly abducted.

Police and the university say investigation and security operations are ongoing.

No verified recovery of the students or arrest of suspects has been announced.

The next material development will be whether the students are recovered safely, whether suspects are identified or arrested, and whether the additional security measures around FUTO and nearby communities improve safety.
