The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed three officers over the fatal shooting of Anthony Obodo during a police pursuit in Port Harcourt and says the former officers will face criminal prosecution.
The disciplinary action was announced on September 2, six days after Obodo was shot on August 27, 2026.

The Nigerian Bar Association said three officers implicated in the incident were presented during an August 31 meeting involving the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, representatives of the association, Obodo’s family and other stakeholders.
The NBA said those three officers were subsequently dismissed after the conclusion of an Orderly Room Trial.
Separate reports of Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju’s September 2 briefing also said three members of the patrol team were arrested, investigated and dismissed.
Police said another officer, Inspector Solomon Nworgu, allegedly left after the shooting and was being sought.
Some published reports put the number of dismissed officers at four. IDNN has not independently established the reason for that discrepancy.
What Police Say Happened
According to the police account, officers from the Agip Division attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Obodo on August 27.
Police said the patrol team pursued the vehicle and that Corporal Alfred Louis fired at it during the chase, hitting Obodo.
He was taken to hospital and was later confirmed dead.
That remains the police version of the incident. It is not an independent reconstruction of the shooting.
The Nigerian Bar Association said the three officers were allowed to give their accounts during an August 31 meeting attended by the police commissioner, representatives of the association, Obodo’s family and other stakeholders.
Dismissal Is Not a Criminal Conviction
The dismissal ends the internal disciplinary process against the three officers identified in that process.
It does not establish criminal guilt.
Adepoju said the dismissed officers would be charged before a court to face criminal proceedings arising from the incident.
As of the latest sources checked by IDNN, an arraignment has not been independently established and the exact criminal charges to be filed have not been confirmed.
That distinction is critical.
An Orderly Room Trial determines police disciplinary responsibility. Any criminal liability for Obodo’s death must be established separately through the courts.
The Accountability Test Now Moves to Prosecution
Police have now taken an internal disciplinary step.
The next test is whether the promised prosecution proceeds, what charges are eventually filed, when the former officers appear in court and what evidence is placed before the court.
Obodo’s family had publicly demanded justice before the disciplinary announcement, while protests followed his death in Port Harcourt.
The case therefore moves into a new accountability phase: away from whether the police will discipline officers involved in the incident, and toward whether the criminal justice process will independently determine responsibility for the fatal shooting.
For now, the verified position is that three officers have been dismissed following the police disciplinary process, another inspector was reportedly being sought, and police authorities say criminal prosecution of the dismissed officers will follow.
