Bayelsa police rescue abducted woman after nearly four weeks

The Bayelsa State Police Command says it has rescued a 42-year-old woman nearly four weeks after she was abducted from Amassoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

Police say the woman was abducted from Amassoma on July 28 and rescued from a forest hideout in Southern Ijaw LGA; one suspect was arrested.

The woman, identified in police reports as Esther Chinedu, was abducted on July 28 after suspected kidnappers reportedly entered her shop pretending to be customers before taking her away.

Police said she was rescued unhurt from a forest hideout in Southern Ijaw LGA on Sunday.

One suspect was arrested during the operation, according to the police.

The arrest does not establish guilt, and the material reviewed by IDNN did not show that the suspect had been convicted or that a court process had been completed.

Police said intelligence helped operatives monitor the kidnappers’ movements and ransom negotiations with the woman’s family.

IDNN is withholding further operational detail because the investigation may still involve other suspects.

The rescue ends nearly four weeks of captivity for the woman, but a wider public-safety question remains: whether the network responsible for the abduction has been fully identified and disrupted.

Police had not, in the material reviewed, announced the arrest of all those believed to be involved or confirmed that prosecution had begun.

The next development to watch is whether investigators make further arrests, recover evidence linked to the abduction and formally charge any suspect in court.
