A Presidential Primary Announced in the Middle of Crisis
The PDP presidential primary date has been fixed for May 25 by a faction of the party aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
The decision emerged from the party’s 106th National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja.
According to the communiqué read by National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed, the party approved a full electoral timetable covering legislative, gubernatorial and presidential primaries.
But the move immediately raised questions.
The timetable was announced while the party remains trapped in a leadership crisis and legal disputes over its national convention.
The Calendar That Opens the 2027 Battlefield
Under the approved timetable:
• Membership register submission — April 10
• State Assembly primaries — May 2
• National Assembly primaries — May 9
• Governorship primaries — May 16
• Presidential primary — May 25
The schedule aligns with the electoral calendar issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Yet the political implications extend far beyond administrative planning.
Fixing the presidential primary date effectively signals that the internal race for the party’s next presidential ticket has begun.
Court Rulings Have Already Shaken Party Leadership
The timetable was released days after the Court of Appeal invalidated the November 2025 national convention that produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee.
The appellate court ruled that the processes leading to that convention violated the Electoral Act and the party’s own constitution.
The judgment deepened the leadership crisis that has split the opposition party into competing camps.
Governors Now Divided Over Reconciliation
Efforts to stabilise the party have produced fresh political divisions.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the party’s Board of Trustees have backed a reconciliation initiative with the Wike-aligned faction.
But Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has reportedly rejected the arrangement.
Party sources say Mohammed believes cooperation with the Wike camp could further weaken the governors’ bloc inside the party.

In Nigerian politics, party primaries rarely operate as routine internal exercises.
They are often the decisive contest that determines who controls a party’s political future.
Delegates, state structures and alliances between governors and national leaders frequently determine the outcome.
