Military sources in N’Djamena confirmed that President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno ordered the deployment of troops, armoured vehicles, and aerial patrols across key border corridors linking Borno and Yobe States in Nigeria to the Lake Chad Basin.
“The president has declared a total lockdown of the Nigerian frontier,” a senior army official told IDNN. “No armed group or foreign force will be allowed to enter Chadian soil under any disguise.”

The sudden closure follows social media speculation that U.S. forces were preparing operations against extremist groups in the Sahel — a claim neither Washington nor Abuja has confirmed.

“The chatter about an American military operation may be misinformation,” said Sahel security researcher Amadou N’Golo from the Dakar Centre for Strategic Studies.
“However, Chad’s leadership cannot ignore how porous its frontier has become, especially with terrorist groups retreating under pressure from Nigerian and Nigerien forces.”
