Bright Ngene Detention Draws Public Outrage

Constituents of Enugu South Urban stormed the Nigerian Bar Associationโ€™s Annual Conference at the International Conference Centre in Enugu to demand the release of their elected representative, Bright Ngene.

Ngene, a Labour Party member and lawyer, has been incarcerated since July 2024 on what supporters describe as โ€œbaseless, politically motivated charges.โ€

Despite his detention, Ngene won a by-election on August 16, 2025, from prison โ€” his second consecutive electoral victory while behind bars.

Protest at the NBA Conference

Protesters carried placards reading: โ€œFree the peopleโ€™s choice,โ€ โ€œSay no to miscarriage of justice,โ€ and โ€œNBA must defend democracy.โ€ They accused the Enugu judiciary of bowing to executive pressure by repeatedly delaying or blocking hearings on his case.

Spokesperson Kachukwu Benedict told reporters:

โ€œFor over a year, Bright Ngene has been unjustly incarcerated. Judges keep recusing themselves, and the Chief Judge has refused to assign the case. This is grave injustice.โ€

Calls for Intervention

The protesters appealed to NBA leaders, human rights advocates like Femi Falana (SAN), and visiting senior lawyers to intervene. They insisted they were โ€œbegging, not fighting,โ€ but vowed to continue peaceful demonstrations until Ngene is released.

โ€œWe will accept any fair judgment, but the judiciary must be allowed to do its job,โ€ Benedict said.

A Test of Democracy in Enugu

Observers say the Bright Ngene detention highlights wider concerns about judicial independence in Nigeria. Analysts warn that jailing an elected lawmaker undermines democracy and risks eroding voter trust.

The case has become a flashpoint at the NBA gathering, reinforcing calls for legal reform and protection of democratic institutions.
