Army Rescues 27 Kidnapped Passengers in Benue
Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have freed 27 abducted passengers in Amoda community, Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State. The operation followed intelligence on a kidnappers’ den where victims were being held. Soldiers stormed the hideout, overpowered the abductors, and secured the release without casualties to the hostages.
Military sources confirmed the rescue as part of intensified nationwide operations.
Nationwide Anti-Terror Campaign
The Army disclosed that the Benue rescue coincided with broader counter-terrorism drives across Nigeria. In the North East, troops engaged Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters in Dikwa, Gwoza, Bama, Banki, and Gujba, killing 15 insurgents and seizing weapons, grenades, explosives, motorcycles, and communication gadgets.
Nationwide, 42 suspects were arrested, and an additional 30 kidnapped victims were freed in other states.
Benue State Government Reacts
Governor Hyacinth Alia welcomed the rescue, stressing his administration’s commitment to security. The governor also ratified the suspension of three state officials, citing the rule of law and due process as guiding principles.
The officials include the chairman of Otukpo LGA, Maxwell Ogiri, the chair of SUBEB, Grace Adagba, and the head of the State Lottery Commission, Michael Uper. Each was suspended for one month after resolutions by the State Assembly.
A Persistent Threat
Despite the breakthrough, analysts warn that kidnappings remain a persistent threat across Benue and neighbouring states. Rural communities and highways have become frequent targets for criminal gangs. Security experts argue that only continuous patrols, intelligence sharing, and community engagement can sustain the gains.
The Army reaffirmed its readiness to maintain pressure on criminal groups. “The fight against kidnappers and terrorists is ongoing. We remain committed to restoring safety and confidence across Nigeria,” a spokesperson said.
