Eight Dead, Farmlands Destroyed as Flood Ravages Ebonyi Community

By IDNN Environment & Climate Desk

Ebonyi flood kills eight in Enohia Itim community, Afikpo Local Government Area, leaving residents in shock and farmlands submerged. The disaster, which struck on August 1, has also destroyed more than 800 farms, threatening food supply and livelihoods.

Afikpo LGA Chairperson Timothy Nwachi confirmed the toll, saying three bodies have been recovered while five remain missing. He extended condolences to the affected families and pledged to work with state and federal agencies to provide relief.

“We will support them and collaborate with relevant agencies to prevent a recurrence,” Nwachi said.

Victims and Damage

Councillor Francis Okpani told IDNN that three of the victims were children. The Federal Ministry of Environment had earlier listed Afikpo as a likely flood zone this season, but residents say warnings were not backed by sufficient prevention measures.

Farmers report losing rice, yam, and cassava crops. Many fear long-term hardship if assistance is delayed.

Government Response and Warnings

Ebonyi’s Commissioner for Environment, Victor Chukwu, said the state’s capital, Abakaliki, is also experiencing severe flooding, worsened by incomplete drainage under the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).

He urged residents in low-lying areas to relocate immediately. Public awareness campaigns and town hall meetings are underway to guide communities on flood safety.
