NPFL Suspends Plateau United Goalkeeper Over Alleged Betting Allegation

By: IDNN Sports Desk

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has suspended Plateau United goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka over allegations of insider betting, a breach of league integrity rules that could have far-reaching consequences for the player’s career.

In a statement signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi, the league confirmed that Adeyinka’s registration has been placed on hold pending the outcome of an investigation.

“This suspension is due to an ongoing investigation into insider betting allegations levelled against you by your club, Plateau United FC,” the statement read. “Information reaching us indicates you refused to sign a contract with a prospective club because it contained a clause allowing immediate termination in the event of betting-related implications. This reinforces our conviction that the matter requires utmost seriousness and urgency.”

The NPFL cited Article 15.5, Section B of its Framework and Rules, which prohibits all players from involvement in betting, with punishments outlined in Section C.

Adeyinka, who joined Plateau United from Kwara United last season, has been invited to present his defence. The NPFL emphasised that his registration will only be reinstated if he is cleared of wrongdoing.

The league also warned that betting by players directly involved in matches erodes public trust and damages the sport’s credibility.

The development underscores ongoing efforts by Nigerian football authorities to combat match manipulation and ensure fair play in the domestic league.
