JOS, PLATEAU — The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 22 suspects in connection with the mob attack on an 18-seater bus transporting 31 wedding-bound passengers from Zaria, Kaduna State, to Qua’an Pan, Plateau.

The gruesome attack took place around 9:47 p.m. on Friday near Mangun village, Mangu LGA, where the bus lost its way and strayed into a community on high alert due to ongoing terrorist attacks.

“The mob intercepted the vehicle, dragged the occupants out, and set it ablaze,” said police spokesperson Alabo Alfred.

While 8 victims were confirmed dead, others sustained severe injuries. The police said 21 passengers were rescued, with 14 escaping unhurt and 7 taken to hospital.

Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina personally led a visit to the scene alongside intelligence and tactical teams. He vowed that those behind the atrocity would face the law.

“This was a cruel, misguided act. We are committed to justice,” he said.

The State Intelligence Bureau and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have been deployed to conduct thorough intelligence gathering and forensic analysis of the crime scene.

Police urged residents of Mangu and surrounding areas to remain calm and report any suspicious movements as part of ongoing peace efforts.

“We cannot tolerate mob justice. It endangers innocent lives and derails national unity,” a police commander added.
