Manchester United End Pursuit of Victor Osimhen Over Wage Demands

Manchester United have officially pulled out of the race to sign Victor Osimhen after failing to reach an agreement over personal terms, IDNN sources have revealed.
Despite initial interest following the striker’s productive loan spell with Galatasaray from Napoli, the Red Devils were unwilling to meet the Nigeria international’s hefty wage demands, understood to be around £300,000-per-week.
Amorim’s Plans Shift Ahead of First Full Season
United head coach Ruben Amorim, who steered the club into the Europa League semi-finals despite trimming his attacking options in January, had identified Osimhen as a key summer target.
However, with the financial structure of the club under careful management by minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club hierarchy, United have opted to abandon the pursuit rather than compromise their wage policies.
“Manchester United are not prepared to meet Victor Osimhen’s demands, leading to an impasse as he prepares to return to Napoli,” IDNN sources confirmed.
Amorim now looks set to pivot towards alternative targets, with Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap emerging as a viable option for strengthening the attack ahead of the 2025–26 season.
Osimhen Still Highly Rated — But Alternatives Explored
The 26-year-old Osimhen, described as “world-class” by former United boss Jose Mourinho, remains one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards following his prolific spell at Galatasaray.
Though rumors had suggested Manchester United were ready to trigger a £65 million release clause, insiders say no formal agreement was close. Negotiations stalled as Osimhen refused to lower his salary expectations.
United’s withdrawal could open the door for Chelsea, who have placed the striker on their summer transfer shortlist. However, Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal have also been linked, with reports suggesting Osimhen would be open to a big-money move to the Middle East.
Manchester United’s Attack Restructure Underway
United’s reluctance to engage in a financially risky deal signals a broader strategic shift under Amorim, who is preparing for his first full season in charge.
In January, the Portuguese tactician sanctioned the loan exits of Antony and Marcus Rashford, the latter joining Aston Villa with a £40 million option to buy.
Amorim’s most significant signing to date, Patrick Dorgu, arrived for £30 million from Serie A side Lecce, but further reinforcements in attack remain a top priority.
