Amaju Pinnick Falls Short: Loses FIFA Council Re-Election by Just One Vote

Amaju Pinnick Falls Short: Loses FIFA Council Re-Election by Just One Vote

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnick, has failed to retain his seat on the FIFA Council after a fiercely contested election at the 14th CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo, Egypt.

Pinnick, who had been a FIFA Council member since 2021, narrowly missed out on re-election, falling just one vote short of retaining his seat. His 28 votes were not enough to secure one of the six available spots for Africa’s representation.

The Election Breakdown: How Pinnick Lost Out

The voting saw intense competition among Africa’s top football administrators. Fouzi Lekjaa of Morocco dominated the polls with 49 votes, while Hani Abou Rida (Egypt) and Djibrilla Hima Hamidou (Niger) followed with 35 votes each.

The final two slots went to:
Ahmed Yahya (Mauritania) – 29 votes
Souleiman Hassan Waberi (Djibouti) – 29 votes

Pinnick’s 28 votes left him just outside qualification, making his exit a bitter disappointment.

Other candidates who failed to make the cut included:
Andrew Kamanga (19 votes)
Yacine Diallo (18 votes)
Augustin Senghor (13 votes)

Meanwhile, Mathurin de Chacus withdrew before the final count.

🚨 What This Means for Pinnick and Nigerian Football

Pinnick had been a major force in African and global football governance, serving on the FIFA Council since 2021 and previously holding key positions in CAF’s Executive Committee. His loss means that Nigeria no longer has direct representation at FIFA’s highest decision-making table.

With his influence on the global football stage now reduced, questions arise:
Will he seek another route back into FIFA or CAF leadership?
What does this mean for Nigeria’s football diplomacy?
Who will emerge as the next Nigerian candidate for global football governance?

🌍 The FIFA Council: Why It Matters

The FIFA Council is FIFA’s highest decision-making body in between Congress meetings. It consists of 37 members, including six from Africa.

Its responsibilities include:
✅ Setting FIFA’s policies and strategy
✅ Overseeing global football development
✅ Making key financial and governance decisions

Pinnick was only the third Nigerian ever to hold a FIFA Council seat, following in the footsteps of Oyo Orok Oyo and Amos Adamu. His loss means Nigeria must wait until the next election cycle to push for a return to FIFA’s elite table.
