Suspected Lakurawa attack kills three at Sokoto–Badagry highway project in Kebbi

Three killed as suspected Lakurawa attackers strike Sokoto–Badagry highway project in Kebbi

Three people, including two security personnel and a foreign construction worker, were killed when gunmen suspected by police to be Lakurawa fighters attacked workers on the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway project in Kebbi State.

Two civilians were also injured in the attack at a construction site in Gubba Village, Andarai District of Maiyama Local Government Area, according to the Kebbi State Police Command.

The attack puts worker safety and the protection of a major federal road project under scrutiny amid renewed security pressure in the Kebbi–Sokoto border corridor.

Kebbi police spokesperson Bashir Usman said the attackers were suspected members of the Lakurawa group who entered the area from the Kebbe axis of neighbouring Sokoto State.

Police accounts described those killed as two security personnel and a foreign national. Subsequent reporting quoting the police identified the security personnel as soldiers and the foreign worker as a Chinese national.

The identities of those killed had not been independently established in the material reviewed by IDNN.

The two injured civilians were taken for medical treatment, police said. Their current condition was not immediately established.

Security agencies said efforts were underway to locate the attackers. IDNN is withholding operational details that could compromise active security activity or put responders and civilians at additional risk.

Separate attack reported in Maiyama

Security authorities also reported a separate attack by suspected Lakurawa fighters on a military Forward Operating Base in Maiyama.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA said troops repelled that assault.

The military-base incident is separate from the attack on the highway construction workers and should not be treated as the same event.

Taken together, however, the incidents underline continuing security pressure in the area and the exposure faced by communities, security personnel and workers operating along vulnerable corridors.

Protection of highway workers under scrutiny

The Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway is a major federal infrastructure project under construction across several states.

The Kebbi attack now raises questions about the security arrangements protecting workers on exposed sections of the route.

It was not immediately established whether construction at the affected site had been suspended, whether additional security measures had been introduced or whether the attack would affect the project timetable.

The police accounts reviewed by IDNN also do not establish whether authorities received any specific warning before the attack.

Those questions require responses from the relevant project authorities, contractor and security agencies.

What remains unresolved

Police attribution to suspected Lakurawa fighters remains an official assessment and has not been independently established by IDNN.

The identities of the two security personnel, the condition of the injured civilians and the operational status of the affected construction site also require further confirmation.

The immediate accountability question is therefore not only who carried out the attack.

Authorities also need to explain what protection was in place for workers on a strategic infrastructure project operating in a security-sensitive corridor — and what will change before work proceeds under the same threat environment.
