NAF 931 crash: Probe begins as recovery continues in Ondo

NAF 931 probe begins as recovery continues after Ondo crash that killed 25

Recovery and investigative operations were continuing in Igbokoda, Ondo State, after the crash of Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft NAF 931, which killed all 25 people on board.

The aircraft crashed on October 5 while travelling from Benin City to Lagos.

The Air Force said five crew members and 20 passengers were aboard and that no survivors were found.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, visited the crash site as recovery teams continued working in difficult swampy terrain and investigators began securing and documenting material from the wreckage.

The central question — what caused NAF 931 to crash — remains unanswered.

The Air Force has cautioned against speculation, saying recovered evidence must be preserved and examined before investigators reach any conclusion.

Recovery continues in difficult terrain

The crash site lies in a swampy area around Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area.

Recovery teams involving military, security and emergency-response agencies have remained at the site, where difficult terrain has complicated access to the wreckage.

As of the latest reporting reviewed by IDNN, efforts to recover victims and remove wreckage from the swamp were still continuing.

The Air Force said recovered items and other relevant evidence were being documented and preserved as part of the investigation.

Aneke told personnel involved in the operation that the process must be handled professionally and thoroughly, while assuring families that the circumstances surrounding the crash would be investigated.

The Air Force has also said affected families will receive support.

Twenty-five people were on board

NAF later released the names of the five crew members and 20 passengers aboard the aircraft.

The service said the aircraft was travelling from Benin City to Lagos when the crash occurred.

IDNN is not reproducing the full manifest in this report because the immediate public-interest question has moved from establishing who was aboard to determining how the crash happened, how recovery is being handled and what the investigation establishes.

Cause remains unknown

No official finding has established the cause of the crash.

That distinction is critical.

The Air Force has urged the public to avoid speculation until evidence from the site and other relevant records have been assessed.

Until investigators make findings public, no explanation for the crash should be treated as established.

Investigation carries the accountability burden

The Air Force says relevant evidence will be secured, documented, preserved and examined.

That commitment now creates the central accountability test.

Investigators must establish what caused the aircraft to go down and whether the evidence reveals any failure that requires corrective action.

No such finding has yet been announced.

The public-interest question is therefore straightforward: will the investigation produce a clear, evidence-based account of what happened and explain what must change, if anything, to prevent a recurrence?

Families wait for answers

For the families of those aboard NAF 931, the consequence extends beyond the recovery operation.

They are also waiting for an authoritative account of why the aircraft went down and what the investigation ultimately establishes.

The Air Force has promised support for affected families and says it will continue providing verified updates as recovery and investigation proceed.

For now, one fact remains fixed and one remains unresolved.

Twenty-five people died aboard NAF 931.

Why the aircraft crashed has not yet been established.
