Beyond the Game: Falcons Show Grace in Victory with Hospital Visit to Injured Salgado

Less than 24 hours after an emotionally charged 2-1 semi-final win over South Africa, members of the Super Falcons of Nigeria made a powerful gesture of sportsmanship, visiting injured South African forward Gabriela Salgado in hospital.

Salgado suffered a gruesome leg fracture in the 88th minute of Tuesday’s clash in Casablanca, leaving players from both sides stunned and visibly shaken. The match ended in high drama, with Nigeria securing a late winner from Michelle Alozie, but concern for Salgado remained front of mind.

On Wednesday, Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade, alongside several teammates, visited the Mohamed VI University Hospital, where Salgado had undergone successful surgery for a mid-shaft fracture of the left leg.

“This is bigger than football,” Ajibade told reporters. “We just wanted her to know we’re with her in spirit.”

Signed Jersey, Words of Strength, and Mutual Respect

During the hospital visit, the Falcons presented Salgado with a signed Super Falcons jersey and shared messages of solidarity and resilience on behalf of the entire Nigerian delegation.

In a team statement, the Falcons said:

“We are profoundly saddened by Gabriela’s injury. In moments like these, the spirit of competition fades, and humanity comes first. We stand firmly with Banyana Banyana.”

The statement continued:

“We hold Gabriela, her teammates, and her loved ones in our hearts and send our deepest wishes for strength and healing.”

Out for the Year, But Not Forgotten

The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed that Salgado, who has been ruled out for the rest of 2025, received full medical attention and will begin her rehabilitation journey immediately.

Despite the physical setback, the emotional support from her on-field rivals now becomes a beacon of unity.

Nigeria Marches to Final vs Morocco with Spirit and Purpose

The Super Falcons now turn their focus to Saturday’s WAFCON final showdown against hosts Morocco, with a record-extending 10th continental crown in sight.

But their gesture toward Salgado has won them praise far beyond football circles — proving that champions aren’t just defined by trophies, but by character.
