DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre says the pressure is on England ahead of their World Cup last-32 meeting, insisting his side have already achieved their tournament target.
The Leopards reached the knockout stage in their first World Cup appearance for 52 years after beating Uzbekistan 3-1, a result that secured their first win in the competition and extended a campaign that has already exceeded expectations.
Now they face England in Atlanta, with Thomas Tuchel’s side expected to reach the last 16 as they chase a first World Cup title in 60 years.
Desabre is not hiding from the size of the task.
But he believes the weight of expectation sits firmly with England.
‘We Don’t Have Much To Lose’
“We don’t have much to lose, but it is also a source of motivation,” Desabre told his pre-match press conference, according to the supplied source material. “If we’re here, it’s because we deserve it.”
England are the favorites. They have the deeper squad, the higher ranking and the heavier national demand. DR Congo, by contrast, have already turned their return to the World Cup into a success story.
Desabre said as much.
“Our World Cup is already a success relative to our goals,” he added. “The pressure is on the England team. They need to keep moving forward towards their objectives.”
It is a classic underdog frame, but it carries real force. DR Congo are not trying to carry the tournament’s expectation. They are trying to weaponise freedom.

England Carry The Burden
England’s task is clear. Win, and they move one step closer to the title dream that has followed every major tournament generation since 1966. Lose, and another campaign collapses under the weight of expectation.
That is why this match is dangerous.
On paper, England should progress. But knockout football has already punished bigger names at this World Cup, and DR Congo have shown enough to make Tuchel’s side uncomfortable.
The Leopards held Portugal to a 1-1 draw in their opening match and narrowly lost 1-0 to Colombia before beating Uzbekistan to secure their place in the last 32.
Those results matter because they show DR Congo can compete with stronger opponents.
They are not arriving in Atlanta as passengers.
Desabre Sees A Chance
Desabre acknowledged the gap between the teams, saying England are ranked fourth in the world while DR Congo are 41st. But he argued that his players have already shown they can compete tactically with elite opponents.
That is the belief DR Congo will carry into the tie.
They do not need to dominate England. They need to stay alive, frustrate, compete physically and make the favourites feel the clock.
The longer the game remains tight, the heavier the pressure becomes for England.
For DR Congo, every minute of resistance increases belief. For England, every missed chance increases noise.
That is the psychological battleground Desabre is trying to create before a ball is kicked.

England Warned
This is not the same story as England’s internal warning from Jordan Henderson.
That story was about calm inside the England camp. This one is about pressure from the other side: a coach telling his players and the world that the favourites have far more to lose.
Desabre’s message is simple.
DR Congo have earned their place. Their World Cup is already a success. Now they have the chance to turn it into something historic.
“It is an opportunity to pull off another remarkable feat,” he said.
England will still start as favourites.
But favorites do not win because of status. They win by managing the moment. DR Congo have already reached their target. England are still chasing theirs.
